Sean was the keynote speaker at the annual Professional Insurance Brokers Association, Financial Broker Conference in the City West Hotel,Dublin.(PIBA are the national voice for Financial and Insurance Brokers of Ireland).
Joining Roisin Clarke, Chairman, Audrey Feary, Events Co-ordinator and over 400 members, Sean addressed the many challenges faced by small and medium businesses across the country. He also shared valuable tips and tools from his own experience and from the hundreds of successful entrepreneurs he has profiled in his weekly column in the Sunday Independent, on how Financial Brokers can adopt their skills sets and mindset to increase the success of their businesses.

Sean was the Chair again of the Main Stage at this years hugely successful National Conference and Exhibition. Attended by over 300 exhibitors and more than 3,000 visitors, this was the largest gathering of decision makers in the world of manufacturing and supply chain management. Visitors heard from an impressive line-up of manufacturing leaders, academics and government agencies in a stimulating blend of engaging key note addresses and moderated debates.

Sean joined William Brennan, Sandra Jameson and others as the guest speaker at the Ashbourne Chamber’s successful networking event. There he addressed a range of topics including what successful companies in Ireland are doing that others can learn from, coming out of recession how SME’s need to develop meaningful strategies to grow their businesses, how some companies are gearing up to proactively address the challenges posed by Brexit as well as sharing valuable tips and tools for better networking in business.

Sean was the guest speaker at this very well attended event to look at chalenges and strategies for local businesses in the face of the impending opening of a ring route around the town. Joining Sinead Casey from Wexford County Council, Niall Bennett and John Mc Sweeney, AIB and Mary Browne of Browne’s Photography and other Board members, Sean talked about the need to adapt positively to such changes and explored the opportunities that this development presented as well as the need to work together to ensure a community based, coordinated and conserted response.

Sean was the Chair at the first Breakfast Briefing organised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers in Ireland (CIBSE).
Sponsored by Electric Ireland and officially opened by David Doherty CIBSE Chairman, the event was attended by almost 100 Building Services Engineers. Sean moderated an interactive and thought provoking debate on the major issues currently facing the construction sector in Ireland. The panel consisted of industry experts – Sean Downey, Director of Specialist Contracting with the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), Corole Pollard, President of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI), David Corrigan, Managing Director of Axiseng and Fellow of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland (ACEI) & Kevin Kelly, Head of the School of Multi-Disciplinary Technologies at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Sean joined the Independent News & Media (INM) team as part of their series of engaging breakfast seminars for the SME sector focusing on Digital Marketing. Along with the digital marketing team from INM, Sean shared stories of how indigenous Irish companies are continuing to be successful but that part of their success depends on their ability to embrace change, including digital marketing, as a way of growing their business. The team presented case studies of how companies are successfully using digital marketing campaigns to drive potential customers to their websites and outlets and are increasing revenues as a result.

Sean chaired this conference for the third year in a row. Numbers have now grown considerably with over 2,500 visitors from manufacturing and supply chain firms throughout the country turning up to hear the 100 speakers and view the 160 exhibitions stands. This year’s programme included such diverse topics as Lean, Supply Chain & Logistics, Labelling & Packaging, R&D, Serialization, Sustainability, 3D printing, Nanotechnology & The Internet of Things. For the first time, there was also a dedicated Jobs & Skills Expo for those looking to work with top Irish and Global manufacturing companies.

Organised by Tom O’ Dwyer, Head of Dairy with Teagasc, this annual Dairy Conference was attended by over 500 delegates from across the island. Sean addressed the need for those now running farm enterprises to see farming as a business rather than a lifestyle. He also spoke of the importance of embracing change, developing strategies for their businesses, the potential that comes from harnessing emerging technologies and the need for farm owners and managers to increase their effectiveness by developing enhanced management capacity. Other sessions over the two days focussed on the areas of grassland, breeding and herd fertility, finances, animal health, labour and systems.

Organised by Kells Chamber to help stimulate a greater sense of positivity and community engagement in the future of the area, Sean addressed the gathering of local businesses and would-be entrepreneurs. He explained the importance of believing in ourselves and our communities and of working together to create a more dynamic local economy. He praised Kells Chamber for their foresight in organising the event and in bringing key stakeholders together – which was key to affecting change locally.

Sean was Chair of the 2015 judging panel for the Leinster Regional ​Final of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Awards. He was joined on the judging panel by the heads of Wexford and Wicklow’s Local Enterprise Offices, Tom Banville and Sheelagh Daly. These fledging businesses competed to go through to the National Finals with exciting projects that spanned sectors as diverse as food, technology, software, digital health, manufacturing and design. Sean joined the Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, Richard Bruton, T.D., to outline the importance of such events in fostering a spirit of Entrepreneurship among young people. Others who were in attendance to support the event included CEO and Mayors of the Local County Councils as well as the Head of Fingal Local Enterprise Office, Oisin Geoghan.
